"It did," Autumn said, looking at the ground. "Take getting thrown out by your own parents because they don't even like you, let alone love you, add a does of getting made fun of for years because you're just slightly different from the rest of the kids there, plus the fast that I couldn't make friends easily, subtract the happiness I got from finding an actual friend in Logan, and finally, add the disgrace I got from being kicked out, along with Logan, for aiding in an attack on the other kids.... Then you've got about half of how much it sucked."

Daemon stared down at his hands, which because of the way he leaned against the wall were out of Autumn's view. He flexed the ring finger of his left hand, watching intently as the snake tooth slid out easily. There was a short twinge of pain and his image flickered, but quickly returned to being opaque. "Indeed," was all he murmured.

Autumn looked over at Daemon curiously. "I don't suppose I get to know anything about you, considering this is a dream and all, do I?" she asked. She had a feeling that she was going to want to get to know him more when she woke up the next morning.

Daemon looked over his shoulder and said with a bitter smile, "Anything I said would be lies anyway. Because this is a dream and all, of course."

Autumn nodded, saddened by the truth his words held. "It's all just figments of my imagination," she said. "I wish it was real though," she added quietly.

Daemon bit the inside of his lip. It would endanger the job. It would endanger him. And it would endanger her. No trail. He hardened his resolve and said, to seem more like a typical dream, "Giraffes eat cotton candy, you know."

Autumn burst out laughing and buried her face in her hands in an attempt to muffle her laughter. She looked up at him when she had composed herself. "I should probably come up with something stupid to say like, 'But cotton candy doesn't grow on trees, so how would they find it?' but I really can't... I haven't laughed like that since before... well, you know." The smile fell from her face, but her eyes still had a sparkle of the amusement she found in his statement.

Daemon couldn't help smiling; she had a nice laugh. "You should laugh more often. You know, in real life."

A weak smile graced Autumn's lips in response to Daemon's smile. "I'll try, I promise," she said. "Even if it's just because I made that promise to a figment of my imagination, I'll try. For you."

"Good," Daemon said. Then another, more intense bolt of pain shot through his hand and he winced. Time to go. "I gotta run. The giraffes need more cotton candy." He vaulted himself up onto the ledge of the Astronomy Tower and then stepped off the edge. He fell back into himself, waking with a jolt. Daylight greeted him. Damn - the snake tooth would have to wait a while longer. He had to get to class.

As Autumn watched Daemon fall, she was jolted into being awake. She turned over to see Jasper kneeling next to her. That was when she realized that she was in a tangle of sheets on the floor. "You okay?" he asked. "I figured I should come check on you when you didn't react to falling out of bed and thrashing on the floor for a while." She managed a weak laugh. She was determined to keep that promise. "Thanks, Jazz," she said. "I think I'm fine though."
