"If that makes you feel better," Daemon said casually as the water began to turn pink. When he was satisfied with the condition of his hands, he vanished the water and then conjured fresh water. He got his shirt and pushed it under the water, watching critically as the blood began to diffuse out of the cloth.

Autumn walked closer to him, studying him. "Hey, what's wrong?" she asked. "I haven't seen this side of you. It's not the dream-you, it's not the side that hates the world... I'm not sure what this side is though.."

Daemon swirled the shirt a little bit in the water, then left it there and crossed to Autumn in two quick steps. A coldly amused glint in his eyes, he reached out and ran his still-wet fingers down from her temple, to her cheek, until they rested just under her chin, on the pulse of her throat. A tiny, nearly imperceptible flex of his ring finger, and the snake tooth rested delicately against her skin. "You really shouldn't barge into people's rooms like that," he purred.

Autumn's breathing quickened when Daemon got close to her and her heart stuttered when he touched her face. Her breathing increased even more, for a different reason, when she felt the snake tooth at her throat. "I-I'm sorry," she said quietly. "I knocked first and I thought... I mean, after the other day..."

"You thought you knew me," he said, smiling - it was somewhere between seduction and glazed sleepiness. "You assume too much, and trust far too easily." He lowered his lips next to her ear, hair brushing her skin as he whispered, "Here's a little tidbit about me. I'm a very good gravedigger. Nobody would ever find you."

Autumn gulped and backed away from him slowly. She shook her head, not believing him, but she couldn't bring herself to tell him. "I'm sorry," she was all she could say. She didn't like the look in his eyes, it wasn't him. It wasn't the Daemon from her dream.

Daemon's smile broadened slightly, acquiring a razor edge, and he said, "But as skilled as I am at that, I'm far better at killing. I could kill you so quickly, you wouldn't have time to think. Perhaps another tragic accident. Terrible, terrible. What has the youth of today come to? My poor, misunderstood cousin, overcome by the disdain and hatred of her peers, felt the need to put herself out of her misery tonight. And then her classmate, Autumn, upon discovering poor Verginia, was so flooded with remorse and guilt, she soon followed in suit. It's a bit of a stretch - I'd have to work on it a little bit. Your friends probably wouldn't believe you'd have that much sympathy for her, would they? Perhaps woeful coincidence? Misery over the loss of your boyfriend to another man might have nudged you over a ledge."

Autumn listened to the words flow from his mouth and tried to convince herself that they weren't true. A few tears fell from her eyes and her hand flew to her mouth as she heard him threaten her life. But what broke her was the mention of losing Chaosti. Her legs became weak and she fell to her knees. After a minute, she found her resolve again and found the courage to look at him. "No, you wouldn't do that," she said, her voice still shaky. "You couldn't.... I've kept my promises. All three of them! I've asked for nothing..." She shook her head and looked back at the floor. "This isn't you. Not the real you."

With another minuscule shrug, Daemon turned, sheathing the snake tooth, and returned to the water bowl. He pulled the shirt out of the water, examined it, and submerged it in the water again, scrubbing at the cloth. "And for that, if you are able to hold your tongue and keep this to yourself, I may be able to spare you. Within a few days I'll be gone anyway - distraught over my cousin's abrupt and violent end, I won't feel at ease continuing my schooling here."

"So that's it, huh?" Autumn asked, her tone growing bitter. "You just come and go, hopping from place to place, staying only long enough to kill your 'long lost relatives'?" She sighed and kept her gaze on her hands in her lap. "You know, I saw your expression when I mentioned the orphanage," she said in almost a whisper. "There are options besides the first thing that comes up. You can stay in one place, have a home. This doesn't need to be your life, Daemon."

Daemon raised an eyebrow at her and said, "I assure you, I'm quite used to it. This has been my life since I was six." He pulled the shirt out of the water again, examining the sleeves, and gave a mournful sigh. "Alas. I'm afraid it's ruined."

Autumn sighed and got up. She walked over to him and held her hand out for the shirt. "Give it," she said. "It'll take me a whole 2 seconds to fix." She still had tear stains on her cheeks and she didn't want to meet his eyes, but she tried to. It went back to not reacting to being intimidated and not backing down.

Daemon looked at her warily, but handed over the sodden shirt. "Why are you even still here? You should have fled for your life and not looked back."
[Sorry for the shortness and suckiness..]

Autumn muttered a quick drying spell and a Scorgify before she started folding the shirt. She then looked up at him and shrugged. "My best friend is a vampire. That trip to Paris? Included a wonderful trip to see the wonderful head vampire of the city. I got enough death threats in ten minutes there that I'm kind of used to it," she said. "Plus, I meant what I said. That's not the real you." She held out the stain-free, folded shirt.

Daemon took the shirt, examined it, and, satisfied, put it away in his closet after saying, "Thank you." He found another shirt and slipped it on. As he buttoned it up, he glanced up at her from under his bangs and asked, "And how exactly would you know that?"

Autumn shrugged. "You're welcome. And it's just a hunch, really," she said. "Mostly, I think the version of you I saw in my dream was the closest I've come to seeing the real you. You were still a bit guarded, and yet free at the same time." She smiled at the thought of her dream. "I mean, the crazy, homicidal version could never come up with something about giraffes eating cotton candy."

Daemon just looked at her for a moment, then shook his head and said, "That is remarkably foolish of you." He smiled sardonically and said, "You really have no idea of the danger you're in right now, do you? I've killed people for less than walking in on me washing off someone else's blood."

Autumn squared her shoulders and looked him in the eyes. She was determined to not be intimidated again. "Then I have to hope that I've made some good impression on you for you not to kill me," she said. "And hopefully I can make you see that there is more to life than... than what you've been doing."

"This is my life," Daemon said with a shrug. "It's all I know how to do. I'm good at it. And you are quite insane for still wanting to associate with me." He vanished the pink-tinted water still in the bowl and put it back into his closet.

Autumn crossed her arms over her chest and raised an eyebrow. "I've been called insane since I was born," she stated. "You really think I'm going to stop now? I've got a reputation to uphold."
