Daemon drifted off to sleep, but was roused not long later by an intense craving for poison to restore his body's chemical balance. He found the ingredients on his bedside table and mixed it up as quickly as possible, smiling a little at the note he found. He drank the dilution of poisons, then promptly went back to sleep.
Down in the common room, Layali looked up as Autumn appeared, concern in her eyes. "You okay?" was all she asked.

Autumn nodded, smiling weakly. "I'm fine," she said. "Not a scratch on me." She looked at Logan as she said the last part. She sat down near them and set the book on one of the coffee tables. "He's going to be fine," she said. "Yeah, but is that a good thing?" Logan said quietly.

Layali fidgeted nervously. She didn't like interfering with other people's lives, but she was concerned. "Are you sure it's wise to be hanging around him?" She asked softly.

Autumn looked back and forth between the two of them, confused. "I don't see anything wrong with it," she said. She sensed the worry and concern from them, but they didn't know him like she did. But she couldn't tell them. She'd promised. "You know nothing about him besides what's in this book," Logan said, trying not to yell. "You've been blocking too much and you've let your judgement slip." Autumn bit her lip and looked down, fighting the urge to tell her friends, but holding to her promises.

"And that claw didn't exactly look like it was for shaking hands," Layali commented. "We're just worried about you. He doesn't seem like the most savory of personalities."

"He is though," Autumn said. She ran her hands through her hair. "There really is more than his stupid first impression as a careless moron. He's just.... guarded. You two should respect that quality." "Actually, my first impression of him was a smoker with absolutely no respect for anything in the world," Logan spat. "But he does care!" Autumn said.

"How do you know?" Layali asked quietly. "You haven't known him very long. Have you seen into his mind?"

Autumn shook her head. "No, I haven't," she said quietly. "I promised not to. But feeling his emotions and listening to his thoughts are completely different. I know he cares. I can feel that he cares." "But you don't know what he cares about," Logan said. "He could have this evil scientist plan to take over the world and only cares about that. He obviously doesn't even care about his own health." "Seriously? If he wanted to take over the world, his own health would be a top priority. He wouldn't be able to do in unless he was completely healthy," Autumn retorted, trying to pull him away from the main argument. "Yeah, I guess you're right," Logan grumbled.

"Death surrounds him like a cloak. Ghosts cling to him," Layali said, shaking her head. "You can't just ignore that. They are too vague and there are too many for me to pick out individual voices, but they blame him."

Autumn sighed. "I don't care," she said. "I don't care about his mistakes in the past. Everyone has a future. That includes him." "He doesn't seem like the stereotyppical bad boy, Autumn. He's dangerous," Logan said. "How can you say that, Logan? You know even less about him than I do. You've never been one to judge," Autumn said, looking frustrated.

"We just don't want to see you hurt, that's all," Layali tried to explain.

"I know, but you don't see what I do," Autumn tried to explain. "It's almost like he's two different people but he doesn't want anyone to know about that second, better person." "And how do you know this?" Logan said, still trying to contain his frustration. Autumn bit her lip again, tears forming in her eyes. She shook her head. "Come on, you can tell me," Logan said, his tone much softer as he didn't like seeing her cry. "I can't," she said in a whisper. "I promised."

Layali looked worried, but didn't say anything for a long moment. Finally she asked, "Are you sure you don't just want to see him as a better person? After Chaosti.. Well, you're kind of vulnerable right now."
Elena came into the Air Common Room, humming merrily to herself. Her morning sickness was starting to taper off, which cheered her immensely, even if she was starting to show. There was a small but distinct bulge in her stomach now, her shirt fitting a little tighter than normal. As she took in the dour mood of her friends, she raised an eyebrow and asked, "Uh-oh. What's happened now?"

Autumn shook her head quickly in response to Layali's suggestion. Logan's face was carefully kept blank. "No, this has nothing to do with him," she said. "Well, I guess it sort of came about because of him, but... urgh... I'm sorry. I can't tell you why, but I know that I'm not imagining it. I swear I'm not. But I promised him..." She looked up at Elena when she came in, but didn't say anything. Logan looked at his ex-girlfriend and sighed. "Autumn is trying to convince us that the new guy isn't as evil as he looks. Too bad she has no proof," he said. Autumn looked down and shook her head, repeating, "I'm sorry." "You've never kept anything from me," Logan snapped when he heard her. She looked at him, tears falling from her eyes. "I want to tell you. But I can't break a promise. I know you don't like it, but I do trust him. Please believe me, Logan," she said. "I don't know if I can, Autumn."

Layali reached out a hand to take Autumn's and said, brows furrowed with concern, "It's okay. Just.. be very, very careful, alright? And try not to be alone with him too often." Elena frowned, looking confused as she sat down. "Wait, wait.. Who are we talking about?"

Autumn nodded in response to Layali, but she was still looking at Logan. "We're talking about Daemon," Logan told Elena harshly. "Please don't do this, Logan," Autumn said. "If I can't be alone with him, then stay with me. I'll prove to you that he cares. Just please.... don't do this." Logan looked at his best friend then at his girlfriend who was being much more supportive. He sighed and got up to hug Autumn. "I just don't want to see you get hurt," he said. She nodded into his shoulder. "And I don't like that you're keeping things from me. You tell me everything." "I promised him," she whispered.

-----A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER...-----
Daemon entered his dorm through the window, swiftly and efficiently. He shut the window again, latching it securely, then went over to the full-length mirror hanging from the back of his door. He tilted his head slightly as he examined himself, a lazy smile on his lips and his eyes slightly glazed, as if with boredom. He calmly unbuttoned his dress shirt, stripped it off, and tossed it onto his bed. The blood was mostly concentrated towards the bottom of the long sleeves. His hands were rather more stained, but the rest of his clothes had escaped unscathed. Shame to lose such a nice shirt, though. Maybe if he soaked it in cold water soon enough, the stains would come out. He took a large bowl and a small cloth out of his closet, then used his wand to conjure water into the bowl.

Autumn stepped into the Air Common Room alone and revelled in the fact. Logan had been following her around like a bodyguard. He was actually spending more time with her than his own girlfriend. She was excited when he told her that she would be alone while he went hunting. She decided that now was a good time to go check on Daemon. She hadn't seen him since she left his room a few days before. She smiled and, after dropping her bag, practically skipped up to her new friend's dorm. She knocked twice in quick succesion and opened the door. "Hey, I just wanted to see how you were doing after-" She stopped when she saw that he was shirtless, but, before she could spend time ogling him, she noticed the blood on his hands. She took another step forward and closed the door behind her. "Oh god, what happened? I thought the thing was better..."

Daemon glanced briefly over at Autumn as she entered, gave a slight, one-shouldered shrug, then immersed his hands in the water. "It's fine. There was simply.. an unfortunate accident." He calmly soaked the wash-cloth and began to scrub fastidiously at the more dried-on patches of blood.

"An unfortunate accident? That's like tripping on a precariously placed skateboard," Autumn said with disbelief. "This looks more like you dipped your hands in a vat of fake blood.... It is fake, right?" She bit her lip and looked up at him, concern shining in her eyes.
