"So, you're saying that this..... this energy ball shit is normal for you?" Todd says as he looks at the charred spot on the tree behind him. "God, it's like you burnt the thing." "Not really, smart one. If I'd burnt it, it would still be on fire," Autumn says from her perch two feet in the air. She has her feet hooked behind an invisible rung on an invisible chair ((Sorry, I read that part of the book today..)) as she tosses an energy ball between her hands. "But... God, I really need to stop getting on your bad side." "Damn right. Otherwise you're going to find yourself in some unexplainable situations," Autumn grins. She lifts him into the air, turning him onto his head. She looks from him to the energy ball and back. Then she rolls her eyes and throws it past him before setting him right way up on the bench again. He breathes heavily and glares at her. "You scare the shit out of me sometimes." She grins. "Only sometimes? I need to try harder."

A girl with the vaguely lost and impressed expression that marked her as a newcomer to the school wandered out of one of the many doors that led into the gardens. She walked slowly, thoughtfully, and with her arms crossed over her abdomin, a subconcious closed-off, protective gesture. Her wavy golden-blonde hair was left down, and the wind quickly took the opportunity to play with it, mussing it a bit. She was a bit too skinny to be healthy and had vague shadows of old bruises on her wrists, but it was an improvement from earlier. She'd just spent the night in the Hospital Wing where healers had fussed over her and stuck the magical equivalent of an IV into her arm, the IV bag containing "Nourish-Qwik". She'd been let out this morning. After sitting in her room aimlessly for a while, she'd begun to explore the castle and instinctively found her way to the gardens. Now, sapphire blue eyes scanned the plants as she walked, seeming to search for something - and slowly she seemed to become more relaxed..

Autumn feels a new presence and turns to face the girl. "Look. New kid," she says when she turns back to Todd. He looks at the girl and his jaw drops. He tries to recover, but still looks stunned. "No... It can't be... That isn't..." He tries to get a better look. "Cat?" he says softly.

Suddenly halting in mid-step, the girl frowns, as though something she couldn't quite place was nagging at the back of her mind. She looks up from the flowers and spots the pair, looking at them blankly for a moment before she focused her gaze on Todd. Recognition lights in her eyes and an incredulous grin spreads over her features as she says, "Todd?"

"What?" Autumn says, looking between the girl and Todd. "You know her?" Todd ignores her. "Oh my God..." He runs over and hugs her tightly. "Well, I'll take that as a 'yes,' then," Autumn says. "Though a more direct answer would have been welcome."

A squeak escapes her as the air is squeezed out of her lungs, and Karla says in a strangled voice, "Can't.. breathe.. dying.." She's hugging him back though, despite her complaints, and can't seem to wipe the grin off her face.

Todd loosens his grip on her slightly, but only enough so that he can look at her. "When did you get here? Why didn't you tell me? How did you get here? How've you-" "My god, you ask a lot of questions after trying to strangle the poor girl," Autumn says, repositioning herself on her "stool." "Shut up, Autumn."

Karla laughs and says, "Yesterday; because I didn't know you were here; and by flying horse-drawn-carriage. I could ask you the same things, though." Realizing that somebody else was there, and sticking up for her squashed ribs, she peeked over Todd's shoulder and offered Autumn a tentative smile.

Autumn gives a small wave, sensing that the girl was a bit shy. "Well, Princey decided a while back he was gonna pull me through some dimensional rift with his stupid mage," Todd says, rolling his eyes. "He didn't do it on purpose and you know it," Autumn says. "You know what? Just because you know everything, doesn't mean you have to share it." "Uh, yeah, it does."

Karla's gaze flicks back and forth between the two as they argue, staying out of it but observing with keen interest. Then she winces, touching the tips of the fingers of one hand to her temples and saying, "Could you maybe... turn down the volume of your thoughts a bit or something? Or not think so much? Which shouldn't be tough, you are male. It's just a bit daunting this loud and this close."

Todd laughs, but Autumn instantly goes silent, vocally and in her mind. She looks at the other girl with interest now. "You're a telepath?"

Karla nods and says, "Among other things. All it's been lately is a pain, though."

"Thank god there's a telepath in this world besides me that doesn't collapse and scream for hours at a time," Autumn says, sighing with relief. Todd cocks an eyebrow, but looks back at Karla and steps back. He looks her over from top to bottom. He eventually comes back to her wrists. He takes one of her hands gently and runs his thumb over the faint bruises. "How long?" Autumn stays out of this, blocking herself from reading their thoughts.

Karla gives Autumn a little unsure-but-game smile, not getting it, then her attention switches back to Todd. Her eyes darken with shadows again and the smile vanishes as she realizes - without having to resort to telepathy - the direction his thoughts have taken. Ducking her head slightly to avoid his gaze, she says softly, "A couple months."

He covers his face with his hands, trying to control himself. He calms down, but ends up breathing heavily. "I thought you said they stopped." He looks over her again. "This is all of them right?" he says, pointing to the ones he can see.

"Problem children are never fully cured," Karla says darkly, sounding as though she was quoting someone. In response to his question she simply nods silently.

He groans. "How many times did I tell you that's a bunch of bullshit? I thought it was enough to make you believe that you're not worthless." He sighs.

Looking up finally, a stubborn set to her jaw and a defiant look in her eyes, she says, "I couldn't leave the others. I couldn't leave Mina."

"Cat, I never said you had to leave them. Especially Mina. I just said don't believe the shit they try to make you believe."

Expression softening as she lets her defensiveness go, she sighs and says, "Sometimes it's hard to know what to believe.."
